Kentucky Sex Offender Registration Requirements
Kentucky law requires certain convicted sex offenders to register. The Kentucky Sex Offender Registration Act is found in KRS Chapter 17, Sections 17.500 through 17.580. These laws define who must register and for how long.
Under KRS 17.520, registration lasts either twenty years or for life. Lifetime registration applies to serious crimes. These include Rape in the First Degree and Sodomy in the First Degree. Kidnapping a minor also requires lifetime registration. Offenders with prior convictions must register for life. Those with two or more felony offenses against minors also face lifetime registration.
Twenty-year registration applies to all other qualifying offenses. The period starts after discharge from confinement. It can also start after release from probation or parole. The clock begins on the later of these dates.

Sex Offender Residency Rules in Kentucky
Kentucky places limits on where sex offenders can live. KRS 17.545 sets these rules. The law took effect on July 12, 2006. It applies to many registered offenders in the Commonwealth.
Registrants cannot live within one thousand feet of certain places. These include high schools and middle schools. Elementary schools and preschools are also included. Publicly owned playgrounds are restricted. Licensed day care facilities are on the list too.

Note: Offenders who fail to register face felony charges. A first offense is a Class D felony. Subsequent offenses are Class C felonies.
